Scots rally to defeat Royals 14-8

It took a 28-man effort and beyond, but the Maryville College baseball team overcame an 8-0 deficit to defeat Johnson University 14-8 on Friday evening on MC's Scotland Yard.

The visiting Royals put up seven runs in the second inning taking advantage of three walks and a trio of Scots' errors. Add four key RBI hits and Maryville played from behind for the next four innings.

MC's Joey Tomlinson put the Scots on the scoreboard with a towering home run blast over the left-center field wall in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Maryville's comeback was keyed by five Scots' relief pitchers who combined to allow only one unearned run and four hits over the final 7.2 innings. Michael Hawks, Austin Delozier, Jacob Gossett, Joe Logsdon, and Samuel Joiner kept MC in the game until they erupted for an 11-run seventh inning. Sophomore Joe Logsdon earned the win on the mound after MC's big inning.

Christian Poulsen, Gavin Dooley, Evan Ezell, McKenzie Jackson, and Andrew Garcia each had key RBI's during the seventh inning rally.

MC tacked on a pair of unearned runs in the eighth that included an RBI single to left field by Ezell.

Maryville (4-0) was paced offensively by Evan Ezell. The senior catcher finished 2-for-3 with three RBI. The Scots posted 14 hits on the evening.

In a weekend full of wet weather, Maryville will attempt to play Hiwassee College in a doubleheader on Scotland Yard this Sunday. First pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m.
