The Maryville College baseball team dropped a key USA South series at the hands of LaGrange College following an 11-8 loss to the Panthers in LaGrange, Georgia on Sunday afternoon.
A two-out triple by Jack Layrisson scored Jacon Gassert in the first inning to give LaGrange an early 1-0 lead. Gasert got on after an infield hit advanced the left fielder to second on an errant Scots' throw.
Maryville tied the game in the third inning when Patrick Messinger led off the inning with a double and scored on an Andrew Henry RBI fielder's choice. The Scots' advanced their lead to 3-1 when Alden Wright sent Hayden Hollingsworth and Andrew Henry home with a one-out, two-RBI single to left center field. MC extended their lead to 4-1 on a Panther miscue scoring Wright.
The Scots tacked on to their lead with a run in the fourth when Patrick Messinger laced a double down the left field line and scored when Hollingsworth drilled an RBI single up the middle. Hollingsworth later dashed home on a suicide squeeze perfectly executed by Andrew Henry making the score 6-1.
James Poropatic laced his third home run of the season over the left field wall to lead off the fourth for LaGrange. Jackson Patrick doubled down the right field line sending McKinley Erves home to cut the Scots' lead in half 6-3. MC's Trevor Townsend relieved starter Ricky Ward with a pair of runners in scoring position and got a pair of Panthers to pop up to closed the threat. After four complete innings, Maryville held a three-run advantage.
The Panthers recaptured the lead in the bottom of the sixth. LaGrange's Erves tripled to right field off MC's Townsend. He later scored on a Jackson Patrick RBI sacrifice fly. Dawson Weaver sacrificed Erves to the plate for the host's 5th run. A bases clearing opposite field triple by James Poropatic gave the Panthers an 8-6 lead before Layrisson laced an RBI single up the middle to plate Poropatic. Six runs and four hits later, LaGrange claimed the lead 9-6 after six complete innings.
LaGrange added a run in the bottom of the seventh. Following a pair of infield hits, Rhett Mixon singled to left field with two outs to score Patrick. With seven innings in the book, LaGrange led 10-8.
The Panthers extended their lead in the eighth when Poropatic doubled, advanced to third on a fly out, and scampered home on a wild pitch. Going into the Scots' final at-bat, LaGrange held an 11-8 lead.
The loss moves Maryville to 18-5 on the season and 4-5 in USA South play. LaGrange's victory lifts the Panthers to 14-11 overall and 4-5 in league action. LaGrange's Gibson Bittner earned the win while Zach English closed the door over the final 2.2 innings to tally his third save of the season. MC reliever Joe Logsdon suffered the loss after allowing a trio of earned runs in the sixth inning. Patrick Messinger paced MC's eight-hit attack with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate with a pair of runs scored. Andrew Henry, Johnny Carpenter, and Alden Wright each finished with a pair of RBI.
