Maryville College earned the USA South sweep over Covenant College, as the Scots won 6-1 in game three.
Following a grueling four-hour game that ended in a thrilling 10-9 extra innings Maryville win, the MC would score three times on wild pitches and a fourth on a bases loaded walk. The Scots relied on Ricky Ward to fend off the Georgian Scots before scoring five over the final three innings.
Ward earned the win, going seven complete innings while allowing just one earned run. The senior struck out seven, as he allowed just three hits.
Samuel Joiner completed the final two innings to earn his second save of the season, giving up no hits and walking only two.
Maryville College would score first in the bottom of the fourth. Petersen singled to left, before an Alden Wright single and an error left runners on the corners. The Scots would attempt the delayed steal, as Wright was out on the play. Petersen slid safely home on the play, as the Scots led 1-0 after four innings.
Covenant would break up Ward's no-hitter in the top of the fifth. After a walk, Tyler Moore blooped a singled to right-center that advanced Ken Alexander to third. Moore took second on a throwing error, as the Georgian Scots put two runners in scoring position. Ward would end the threat with his sixth strikeout of the game to preserve the 1-0 lead.
Covenant would tie the game in the top of the sixth, however. Devin Cerrato's lead-off double down the left-field line allowed him to go to third on Caleb Bloye's fly-out to right. C.J. Edmond's sacrifice fly – also to right – would score Cerrato to knot the game at 1-all.
MC put a pair of runners in scoring position with back-to-back singles by Carpenter and Andrew Henry. Petersen's sacrifice bunt moved them to second and third, before back-to-back wild pitches allowed the two to score. Maryville led 3-1 going to the seventh.
The Scots would extend their lead in the bottom of the eighth, after Johnny Carpenter tripled. Petersen laid down a perfect bunt single to score Carpenter from third. Two hit-by-pitch would load the bases, as pinch runners McKenzie Jackson and Brandon O'Neill moved into scoring position. A wild pitch would score Jackson from third, as a walk juiced the bags again. Messinger would draw the walk for an RBI, as O'Neill made the score 6-1 win.
Maryville (22-5, 7-5 USA South) was led by Carpenter, as Petersen went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run. Henry was 1-for-4 with a run, as Wright and Hollingsworth each had hits. Messinger had an RBI, as Jackson and O'Niell scored runs.
For Covenant (9-16, 7-8) it was a trio of Georgian Scots that had one-hit efforts.
