Maryville baseball ranked Top 20 in both national polls
Maryville College moved into the top 20 in both national polls on Tuesday, as the Scots have compiled a 23-5 record to start the season.
MC is ranked No. 19 – just one spot lower than their best ranking in school history – within the American Baseball Coaches Association poll. The Scots entered the D3baseball.com/National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association poll for the first time of the year with a No. 20 spot.
"It's obviously a good honor," Head Coach Cody Church said. "To be ranked at any point during the year is a great accomplishment, but for our guys – and I know they know this – our goal is to be ranked up there when it comes time for Regional predictions. Hopefully, we're still playing. We've got such a long way to go, but being ranked in the top 20 is outstanding in March. The reality of it is you've got to keep playing good baseball, or you fall out of it in a hurry."
Maryville is one of only two USA South squads to be tabbed within the national rankings, as Methodist University is also ranked at 11th and eighth.
Those two squads will not meet until the USA South Athletic Conference Tournament, however, they do have a pair of games scheduled for after conference play on April 21-22.
Maryville College's 23 wins this season marks the fourth-straight 20-win season for Church and his squad, as it marks the 23rd in school history.
It is only the third time squads have won four-consecutive 20-win campaigns. Eric Etchison and his squads accomplished the feat twice from 1995-1998 and 2000-2003, while Daniel Washburn's teams won three straight from 2007-2009.
"We've had some good groups and some great seniors along the way, starting back to that first year on up to this year's group," Church said. "We've had some good teams. We still haven't accomplished what we ultimately want to accomplish yet, but we're slowly, hopefully becoming more consistent. At the end of the year, that's all you can ask for."
Maryville College will host a trio of USA South contests this weekend, as the face off with Berea College. MC will face the Mountaineers at 7 p.m. on Friday night, before hosting a Senior Day doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m.
