Scots use strong pitching effort from Poulsen to defeat Berea 4-3

Maryville College Head Baseball Coach Cody Church and his staff honored their 14 seniors before the Scots earned their 25th win of the season with a 4-3 victory over Berea College in the second game of the USA South three-game series.

MC Christian Poulsen (5-0) earned his fifth win of the season after scattering seven hits over 7.1 innings of work. The junior right-hander allowed only one earned run while striking out three.

Berea got on the scoreboard first in the second inning when Andrew Akins deposited a one-out double down the right field line. A hit by Nick Bottom and a ground out RBI by T.C. Eads gave the Mountaineers an early 1-0 advantage.

MC third baseman Mike Homan put the Scots up 2-1 in the bottom of the second when he lifted his second homerun of the season onto Honaker Field scoring Alden Wright who earlier singled up the middle.

The Mountaineers tied the game in the third with an RBI single up the middle by Nathan Summey scoring Cambridge Dacci who led off the inning with a single and was sacrificed to second.

The Scots went up 3-2 in the fourth when catcher Evan Ezell stroked a one-out opposite field double down the line before shortstop Patrick Messinger drove home Ezell with a single to right field.

Maryville tacked on an insurance run and eventual game-winner in the eighth when Johnny Carpenter led off the inning with an opposite field double down the right field line. He later scored on an RBI single by first baseman Joey Tomlinson.

Berea took advantage of a Maryville miscue in the ninth, but MC's Samuel Joiner earned his third save of the season by inducing a final groundout to shortstop Patrick Messinger to close the Scots 25th win of the season.
