Strong mound work from Poulsen, Messinger help Scots claim season opener 6-2

Maryville College's Christian Poulsen scattered eight hits over six innings allowing only a pair of runs to help the Scots claim their 2019 season opener by the score of 6-2 over Belhaven University in Jackson, Mississippi late Saturday evening.

 

Belhaven (2-1) tallied an unearned run in the first before Maryville posted a trio of runs in the third. Logan Hayes scored on a Jake Petersen fielder's choice before Alden Wright blasted a double to center field scoring Hayden Hollingsworth and Petersen.

 

Belhaven pushed across their only other run in the third with a clean infield single by Justin Milam scoring Tucker Calhoun.

 

The Scots packed on insurance runs in each of the final three innings.

 

In the 7th, Ryan Jones doubles to left center field scoring Cody Gregory. In the 8th, Hollingsworth scored an unearned run off a Peyton Sawyer single to left. In their final inning, Jones came home on a wild pitch.

 

While Poulsen earned the victory allowing only one earned run, Zach Messinger claimed a save with three shutout relief innings. He allowed only a single hit while striking out four.
