Scots defeat Rhodes 4-2 as Davis, Cooper, Joiner excel on mound

Maryville College's Jordan Davis scattered only a pair of hits through six innings to help Maryville College defeat Rhodes College 4-2 on Saturday evening in Jackson, Mississippi.

 

The junior, right-hander transfer struck out nine in his debut in the orange and garnet allowing only a pair of earned runs.

 

Rhodes plated their first run with a sacrifice fly in their first plate appearance.

 

Maryville answered in the third when Peyton Sawyer and Alden Wright each dashed home on a Lynx miscue.

 

In the 5th, Wright sent Jake Petersen home on a sacrifice fly.

 

Rhodes tried to rally in the 6th when Jacob Telli scored on a Chris Penna Double, but DJ Cooper and Samuel Joiner came in for Maryville and closed the door to preserve the victory. Cooper tossed a pair of scoreless innings allowing only one hit. Joiner earned his first save of the season with a pair of strikeouts.

 

MC tallied their final run in the 9th when Jake Petersen dashed home on a passed ball.

 

Maryville (2-0) was paced offensively by Jake Petersen (2-for-3, 2 runs, 2 walks) and Peyton Sawyer (2-for-3, 1 run, 1 walk). Alden Wright posted the Scots' lone RBI during the victory.

 

The Scots will challenge tournament host Millsaps College on Sunday to complete their season-opening tournament.
