Scots fall in hard fought game to NC Wesleyan 1-0

After an exhausting ninety minute affair, the men's soccer team from Maryville College had nothing but a 1-0 defeat to USA South foe NC Wesleyan to show for their effort on Saturday afternoon in front of 152 fans at Maryville College.

The lack of goal scoring in the first half had nothing to do with a lack of action or opportunities. The Scots would have six corner kicks in the first half to a mere one for NC Wesleyan, and for the most part, Maryville would have the better of the play through the first 45 minutes of action. The lone goal of the game would come in the 77th minute of play as a low strike through the box would find its way to the back of the net and cost the Scots a chance to earn a much better decision.

"It was one of those days when I don't know if our guys physically could have played much harder," said head coach Pepe Fernandez. "I'm proud of our effort today and wish we would have got a better result."

The loss drops Maryville to 4-9-2 on the year and 2-3-1 in USA South action. Maryville will now host Methodist University on Sunday to compete the weekend. Game time is set for 1:00 pm.
