Blackburn's hurling, Campbell's blast sends Scots past Wesleyan, 10-2

Maryville College opened USA South play on Sunday afternoon with a 10-2 win over Wesleyan College (Ga.) in just five innings.

The Scots' Nicole Blackburn moved to 2-0 inside the circle this season, as Taylor Campbell's second home run of her career pushed Maryville to the victory.

Blackburn was nearly perfect within the circle, as she gave up just three hits in five complete innings. She held the Wolves without an earned run, as she scattered seven strikeouts.

A trio of walks in the first inning aided the Scots in scoring the first run of the afternoon. Campbell laced an RBI double to left-center to score Christina White from second, as Maryville had runners on second and third in Rachel Taylor and Campbell. A line out would strand them there, as the Scots led 1-0 after one inning.

Sarah Gordon got MC started with a double in the second, before an infield single by Ashton Hayden caught her at third. However, Morgan Brewer would lace an RBI double to left-center to score Hayden from second for the Scots' 2-0 lead going to the third.

Wesleyan earned their first hit of the ball game in the top of the fourth inning. Savanna Boyette got the hit with a hard-hit liner back to Blackburn, before Kassidy Hulett would earn a single to right-center. A failed sacrifice bunt and a fly out gave the Scots two outs, before a throwing error proved disastrous. The ball exited the field, as both Hulett and Hannah Allen would score unearned runs on the play. Going to the bottom of the fourth, the Wolves had knotted the game at 2-all.

In the bottom of the inning, back-to-back doubles down the line. Christen Torres doubled down the right-field line, before Gordon followed suit down the left-field chalk for her second double of the game. Torres scored on the hit by Gordon, before a Hayden infield single and a walk loaded the bags with no outs. White's two-RBI single through the right side plated Gordon and Hayden, before Campbell would record her fourth RBI of the ball game. The freshman second baseman launched a three-run bomb to right-center to score White and Taylor. Maryville led 8-2 going to the fifth.

Back-to-back-to-back singles loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth for Maryville, before a bases-loaded walk would give Brewer and RBI and score Torres. White tallied her third RBI of the game in walk-off fashion, as she singled up the middle to score Gordon. Maryville would take the win, 10-2, in five innings.

Maryville (8-6, 1-0 USA South) was led by offensively by Campbell's 2-for-3 effort, as the freshman added four RBI and a pair of runs. White was 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs, as Gordon went 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs. Hayden was 2-for-2 with a pair of runs, as Brewer was 1-for-1 with two RBI and a trio of walks. Taylor scored a run on three walks for Maryville, while Aly Snider went 1-for-1.

Wesleyan (4-9, 1-2) saw Hulett go 1-for-3 with a run scored, as Boyette and Chelsea Tussinger added hits. Allen scored the other run for the Wolves in the loss.
