Maryville College used a late rally to close the gap on Piedmont College, but it wouldn't be enough as the Scots fell 4-3.
MC's Morgan Brewer scored two of the three runs, as she batted the other in with a two-run home run. Brewer went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs and a pair of RBI in the league contest.
The game ends the Scots' 90 unanswered run streak and an eight-game USA South win streak.
The Scots will take on Piedmont in game two in hopes of keeping their one-game lead within the USA South Western Division.
Piedmont College would strike first in the bottom of the first. Allyson Gentry singled through the left side, before a pair of wild pitches pushed her to third base. Mariann Kennison would ground out while earning the RBI, before Josie Coker doubled to center. Hannah Hoban switched places with her with an RBI double of her own. After one inning, the Lions led 2-0.
Piedmont would add a third in the third, after Kennison singled to third. Coker laced her second double of the day for the RBI to score Kennison from first, as the Scots trailed 3-0 after three.
Kennison would add her second run of the day, after she doubled to right-center to lead the game off. She advanced to second on a wild pitch, as a walk put runners on the corners. The Lions attempted the double steal, before a Scots' error would allow Kennison to score from third. Piedmont took a 4-0 lead after five innings.
In the top of the sixth, the Scots would rally. Morgan Brewer and Christina White would single to lead off the inning, as Essence Strambler's single to right would score Brewer from second. Taylor Campbell drew a walk to load the bases with only one out, before a line out and a fly out left a trio stranded with a 4-1 score.
Maryville would put a runner on in the top of the seventh on a Piedmont error, as Ashton Hayden advanced to second on the play. Brewer tallied her second run of the ball game, blasting a two-run shot that cleared the highest portion of the fence in center field. It would cut the Lions' lead to just one, 4-3, but the Scots would not be able to complete the comeback.
Maryville (19-9, 8-1 USA South) was led by Brewer's effort, as White went 2-for-4. Christen Torres, Rachel Taylor and Hayden each went 1-for-3, as Hayden scored a run. Strambler was 1-for-4 with an RBI.
Piedmont (18-13, 9-2) saw four Lions record two-hit efforts. Kennison was 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI, as Coker was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Hoban was 2-for-2 with an RBI, as Gentry went 2-for-3 with a run. Haley Hixon added a hit in Piedmonts' nine-hit attack.
