Brewer tabbed TSWA Player of the Week for performance in final week of regular season

Maryville College's Morgan Brewer earned her third major award of the week, as the reigning USA South Player of the Year was tabbed Player of the Week by the Tennessee Sports Writers Association.

Brewer, an Alcoa High School product, was named USA South Player of the Week, as well, while the sophomore third baseman hit .583 in a 4-2 mark. She also earned USA South Player of the Year honors as the first Scot to earn those accolades from the league, while tallying First Team All-Conference Overall and First Team Western Division All-Conference.

Brewer had 14 hits on the week, as she held a 1.000 slugging percentage. She posted a .583 on base percentage to match her batting average.

"That number is pretty big, especially with the competition that we had," Head Coach Leah Kelley said. "She's just seeing the ball really well right now. Especially in that leadoff spot, I need her hitting that well. She's a good person to set the tone for the game. Then, she can come in during big moments with runners in scoring position. I trust her out there, and I know that she's going to do something in the box."

In a 4-3 loss to Piedmont College, Brewer went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs and a pair of RBI. She also blasted a two-run homer in the contest, before bolstering a 1-for-4 effort in the 3-2 win over the Lions. Brewer had a run and an RBI in that contest, as well.

In a 9-0 win over Huntingdon, Brewer again had a great outing. The Maryville, Tenn. native went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs and a double. She added her second double of the day with a 1-for-3 effort in game two, while also scoring a run.

Finally, Brewer was a big part in aiding the Scots in claiming their first-ever UaSA South Regular Season Title. The championship is the first of its kind for the MC softball program since 2009 when the Scots won the Great South Athletic Conference.

She went a combined 6-for-9 with three runs, three doubles, a triple and six RBI.

In game one, Brewer was 3-for-5 with a pair of runs and RBI, as she went 3-for-4 with a run and four RBI in game two to claim the title outright.

On the year, Brewer holds a .393 batting average in the leadoff spot. She had 46 hits, 42 runs and 30 RBI, while stealing 17 bases. The Alcoa High School product has 11 doubles, two triples and two homers for a .573 slugging percentage.

"Not only is she a sophomore, but she's an early graduate from high school sophomore," Kelley said. "She's just super athletic. Recruiting her, it was big competition. There were a lot of people after her, so I was glad to snag her. She's definitely the type of third baseman that I want – super athletic, does a great job in the box. I trust her over there [on the hot corner] to get bunts, back hands and stuff like that."

MC looks now to the USA South quarterfinals on Friday, April 13. The Scots will play the winner of Covenant College/Meredith College with a 2 p.m. first pitch in LaGrange, Ga.
