The Maryville College volleyball team earned a trip to the USA South semifinals in Danville, Virginia this upcoming weekend after defeating Piedmont College 3-2 in the USA South quarterfinals in Maryville's Cooper Athletic Center on Tuesday evening.
For the third match this season the Scots and Lions battled through five sets with Maryville winning each decision. Tuesday's challenge saw MC drop the first set 25-18 before evening the match with a 25-19 decision. The Lions hit on 38% of their attacks in the third set beating the Scots 25-15. Maryville used a 7-1 run to rally and take the fourth set 25-23. Maryville claimed the decisive fifth set with an amazing 47% attack percentage posting a 15-5 set victory.
Piedmont (16-11) was paced at the net by Kaitlyn Loesel's 15 kills. Anna Wright and Alina Roberts added 10 and eight kills respectively. Loesel finished with a double-double after posting 11 digs. Haley Hixson and Jenna Wendel led the defense with 18 and 15 digs each.
Maryville (17-12) used a strong effort at the net by Brianne Sidner. Sidner threw down a team-high 14 kills while Nia Haller added nine kills. Kelley Wandell and Dejane Hester-Taylor each tallied seven kills. The offense was directed by Taylor Youell and Saidee McDaniel with a combined 46 assists. Haller and McDaniel each directed four service aces. McDaniel finished with a double-double following 20 assists and 11 digs. Kaitlyn Flickinger helped thwart the Lion attacks with a team-high 17 digs.
The Scots will now face tournament host Averett University (31-3) in the league semi-finals on Friday, November 3rd at 6:30 p.m.
