Scots' season ends in USA South Semifinals

The Maryville College Scots saw their 2017 season come to an end on Friday night, as the top-seeded Averett University Cougars took the USA South Semifinal match, 3-0.

Averett – playing in front of a home crowd – won the match by the scores of 25-18, 25-19, 25-23.

Seniors Nia Haller and Kaitlyn Flickinger led the Scots to the semifinals of the USA South in their senior season with a key defeat over Piedmont College on Tuesday.

On Friday, Maryville battled back-and-forth with Averett in the opening set, as a kill by Rhianna Tyldesley would knot things at 14. The Cougars would use a 4-0 run with kills from Brianna Williams and Sarah Smoot, before Tyldesley and Kelley Wandell each threw down kills.

Averett would outscore MC, 7-2 in the final nine points, taking set one, 25-18.

In the second set, Maryville would again match the Cougars run-for-run, as Taylor Youell would ace Hannah Shields to cut it to one, 13-12.  Averett would find a 5-0 run that they would eventually turn into a 7-1 rally, taking a 20-14 lead.

A kill from Lauren Espinal cut the score to 22-16, before the Cougars would take set three, 25-19.

In the third set, Maryville jumped to a 5-1 advantage with an ace by Brianne Sidner and a kill from Lauren Espinal. A pair of kills by Tyldesley would make the score 7-3, before Averett would rally to knot things at 11-all.

The Scots would use kills from Espinal and Tyldesley, as well as a bad Averett set to jump to a 15-12 lead. The Cougars would use a 6-0 run, however, as Brooke Aaron would add the kill for an 18-15 Averett lead.

A Yasmeen Chan ace coupled with kills from Sidner and Wandell would cut the score to 22-21 in facor of Averett. The Cougars would notch a 3-2 run for a 25-23 win.

Maryville (17-13) was led by Tyldesley who had eight kills with three digs. Espinal had five kills with a .364 hitting percentage. She had a trio of digs and a pair of blocks, as Wandell matched her with five kills. Youell had 12 assists and seven digs, while Saidee McDaniel added 11 assists and six digs.

Flickinger had 18 digs for Maryville, while Haller added five digs, three kills and three blocks.

Averett (32-3) was led by Brianna Williams' 10 kills and five blocks, as Hannah Shields had nine kills and nine digs. Maryville held the USA South Player of the Year to only a .147 hitting percentage, as she committed five service errors and a pair of reception errors.

Keenan Marks had 17 assist to McKenzie Miller's 12, as Emily Stanley led the Cougar defense with 12 digs.
