Maryville College Athletics COVID-19 Update

Maryville College Athletics COVID-19 Update

This afternoon, the Presidents Council of the USA South Athletic Conference decided that, effective March 16, the remaining season of competition has been cancelled due to the COVID-19 outbreak. The cancellation includes non-conference contests and tournament competitions in all Spring sports.  Most of our Spring student-athletes and coaches were notified of the conference's action in afternoon meetings today.

"My sincere condolences go out to our student-athletes, coaches and fans who were just beginning to enjoy victories on our fields and courts in warmer weather," stated Maryville College President Dr. Tom Bogart. "But as it is stated on the conference website, 'this decision … keeps the safety of those individuals and their communities at the forefront' by minimizing individuals' risk of exposure to COVID-19."

"Of course, we are all devastated for all our student-athletes, especially our seniors," stated Maryville College Director of Athletics Kandis Schram. "We support the College and our conference in their decision. This is an unprecedented and difficult time. Our top priority continues to be the health, safety and wellness of our students and their families, staff, campus constituents and surrounding East Tennessee communities."

Student-athletes who had planned to stay in the residence halls over Spring Break now will need to find alternate housing through March 27. They should contact Residence Life staff members for assistance.

Dr. Bogart concluded, "I urge you to be patient and stay calm in this time of uncertainty.  Also, check your Maryville College email account and the College's website frequently for information and updates."
