Strong Pitching, Timely Hitting Push Scots Past Tornados 7-1

Christian Poulsen scattered five hits over seven innings on the mound while Peyton Sawyer and Jack Shuttleworth tallied key RBI to lift Maryville College over Brevard College in a USA South Athletic Conference by the score of 7-1 late Saturday evening on MC's Scotland Yard.


Poulsen earned the win allowing only one earned run while also going 1-for-4 at the plate with a run scored and an RBI.


The Scots tallied in the second and third innings before Poulsen drove in Joey Tomlinson with a ground out to second base.


Brevard posted their only run in the fourth inning when Jacob Bass drove in Holden Lanier with a single to left field.


Leading 3-1, Maryville added a trio of insurance runs in the sixth inning. Run-scoring singles by Shuttleworth and Poulsen set the table for a two-run single to right center by Sawyer to finish MC's scoring.


Rocky Mauriello and Bleu Butcher closed the game with a shutout inning each on the mound to preserve the victory.


Maryville advances to 9-6 overall and 2-4 in USA South action. Brevard falls to 4-11 and 0-7 in league play.


The three-game series will conclude on Monday when the Scots host the Tornados at 2:00 p.m. on Scotland Yard.
