Scots fall to Calvin, 7-2, despite allowing just two hits

A combined effort held Calvin College to just a pair of hits on Monday night, but eight walks, three errors and four wild pitches proved costly for the Scots in a 7-2 loss.

MC held the Knights without a hit until the top of the ninth, as Calvin managed five runs on no hits early in the game.

Designated hitter Christian Poulsen led the Scots at the plate with a 2-for-4 effort and an RBI, while Logan Hayes had two runs with a double on the day.

Calvin struck early, taking advantage of Maryville miscues. The Knights hung three runs without a single hit in the opening inning, as the score each run with two outs. Quinn Hyndiuk drew a leadoff walk, as he advanced to third on a sacrifice and a groundout. Andrew Hung walked, taking second on a wild pitch. Hyndiuk scored on a wild pitch for a 1-0 lead, as a wild pitch scored Hung two batters later. An error allowed Matt Raymond to score an unearned run, as the Knights led 3-0.

The Scots cut into the Calvin lead in the bottom of the third. Hayes drew a leadoff walk, before the infielder stole second. Ryan Jones earned the RBI with a hard shot up the middle for a 3-1 lead.

Calvin added to their lead in the top of the fifth. A walk, an error and an intentional walk loaded the bases for MC, before a wild pitch scored Ryan Petersen for an unearned run. Hung flipped a sacrifice fly to right, plating Ryan Pena for another unearned run. The Knights held a 5-1 lead without a single hit.

Maryville again cut into Calvin's advantage in the bottom of the eighth. Logan Hayes lofted a double to left-center, before Poulsen promptly plated the infielder with an RBI single to left-center. Going to the final inning, MC trailed 5-2.

Miles Kuperus broke-up the Scots' no-hitter bid in the top of the ninth with a single through the right side. An error put two runners on, as the Scots used a fielder's choice to get Kuperus at home plate. Hyndiuk flipped a two-RBI double to left-center to score Petersen and Logan Marshall for a 7-2 lead.

Maryville (11-10) saw Jones follow Poulsen and Hayes with a 1-for-3 day and an RBI. Drew Johnson was 1-for-1, while Luke McLemore and Agustus Fraley added hits.

Calvin (4-3) was led by Hyundiuk who was 1-for-3 with a pair of RBI and a run. Kuperus was 1-for-3, while Petersen added a pair of runs for the Knights.
