The Maryville College baseball team claimed a key USA South series with William Peace University after splitting a doubleheader on Saturday on MC's Scotland Yard. The Scots took the opener on the day 10-3 before falling 8-1 in the nightcap.
Maryville's D.J. Cooper earned the victory on the mound in the first challenge after scattering five hits over the first 6.2 innings. The freshman right-hander allowed no earned runs while striking out four. Rocky Mauriello and Anthony Rodriguez combined over the final 2.1 innings of relief allowing only one hit to close the door on the key league victory.
MC tallied an unearned run in the third before William Peace tied the game 3-3 on a trio of unearned runs in the fourth inning.
Maryville's 8-3 advantage was expanded in the seventh when Peyton Sawyer doubled to score Drew Johnson before Kolton Hicks drove a sacrifice fly to right field to score Matthew Petzelt for MC's final run.
In the series finale, William Peace's Austin Skipper did a great job working ahead in the counts and keeping the Scots' hitters off-balance. Skipper scattered six hits over eight shutout innings.
Maryville advances to 18-14 overall and 7-9 in USA South action. William Peace goes to 9-20 and 5-13 following the league split.
The Scots will prepare for their league series at Berea College next Friday in Kentucky.
