Maryville College Jordan Davis was named the USA South Pitcher of the Week, as the junior pitched a complete game against William Peace University.
Davis – a Maryville, Tenn. native – tossed a complete nine innings, garnering the shutout victory, 3-0. The Heritage High School product struck out nine Pacers, while allowing just four hits on the afternoon.
"It was huge," Head Coach Cody Church said. "We're kind of down some arms right now. What he was able to do to set the tone on Friday without us having to go to any of our bullpen was gigantic. He's throwing well. He's done that all year. We've just not been able to get him run support when he's done that. I'm glad to see him finally get rewarded for the type of week he's had all year for us."
Davis earned his second victory of the season, as it took four William Peace players to reach the four-hit mark. The junior did not allow a single run in the victory.
Davis walked just three players in the game.
He halted the Pacers in the top of the fifth after a single and a pair of walks loaded the bases. Davis struck out J Rhew looking to end the only real threat of the game by William Peace.
"He's a work horse," Church said. "He's a guy that you know what you're going to get every week. He's going to go out there and give you a quality start. He'll give you a chance to win every time he's on the mound."
Davis had a trio of three-up, three-down innings in Friday's shutout.
On the season, Davis leads the Maryville College team and ranks third within the USA South with 53 total strikeouts. The junior averages one strikeout per inning in his team-leading 53.1 innings pitched this year.
"He's just a good pitcher," Church said. "He can get you out a lot of different ways. He can get you out early in the count with fastball and breaking balls, or he can go deep and battle with you a while. He can make big pitches when he needs to. He's just a good arm, and we're lucky to have him on our staff."
Davis holds a 2.02 ERA on the year, as he ranks third in the category among USA South pitchers. He's given up just 12 earned runs on the year, while averaging 8.94 strikeouts per nine innings.
Davis will look to lead the Scots into another USA South Athletic Conference series this weekend, as MC travels to Berea, Ky. The three-day series will begin at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 12.
