Scots rally late to complete series sweep of Berea with 3-2 road victory

The Maryville College baseball team completed a key USA South series sweep of Berea College after defeating the Mountaineers 3-2 in Berea, Kentucky on Saturday evening.

 

Maryville's Tyler Stubbs did not allow an earned run over the first five innings scattering six hits while striking out six. Zach Messinger earned the win in four innings of no-hit relief striking out four.

 

Berea took an early 2-0 lead on a Maryville miscue in the first inning.

 

Joey Tomlinson cut the Mountaineer's lead in half in the second inning driving Eric Hart home with a deep sacrifice fly to center field.

 

Mike Homan scored in the fourth to tie the game 2-2 on a Jack Shuttleworth RBI single to left field.

 

Peyton Sawyer recorded the game-winning RBI in the eighth inning with a single to right field sending Christian Poulsen plate-ward.

 

Christian Poulsen (2-for-4) and Mike Homan (2-for-3) recorded over half of MC's seven total hits.

 

The win advances Maryville to 21-14 and 10-9 in USA South action. The loss drops Berea to 7-26 overall and 3-18 in USA South play.

 

Maryville will conclude their regular season and USA South schedule with a three-game series on MC's Scotland Yard against Pfeifer University beginning on Friday. Head Coach Cody Church will honor their eleven seniors before the game on Saturday.
