Lusby's pitching, Hick's grand slam lifts Maryville to 9-5 victory over Brevard

The Maryville College baseball team earned their first victory of the season with a 9-5 road win over Brevard College in a non-conference challenge Sunday afternoon.

Junior right-hander Damian Lusby tossed six complete shutout innings to earn his fifth career mound victory. The Lake Placid, Florida native struck out six Tornados while allowing only one hit in 78 pitches of work.

Maryville's offense lit up Brevard's staff for 14 hits.

The Scots got on the scoreboard in the third inning when Jack Shuttleworth doubled down the left-field line to score Ian Campbell who earlier walked. Eric Hartless sent Matthew Turner towards home plate with a sacrifice fly to give MC an early 2-0 advantage.

MC added an insurance run in the sixth inning when Will Hubbell walked and came around to score on Gabe Lopez's RBI single up the middle.

The Scots broke out the power bats in the seventh inning when Hubbell doubled down the leftfield line to score Turner before third baseman Kolton Hicks blasted his first career grand slam over the left-field wall.

Maryville capped their scoring in the eighth inning when Ian Campbell lofted his second dinger of the season over the left-field fence.

Brevard tallied all their five runs in the ninth off a pair of MC relievers.

Eric Hartless finished 3-for-4 at the plate while Ian Campbell, Matthew Turner, Will Hubbell, and Kolton Hicks each posted a pair of hits.

Maryville (1-3) will challenge Brevard (0-1) in a doubleheader nightcap on Sunday evening in Brevard, North Carolina.
