Scots secure sweep of Brevard with 8-1 road victory

The Maryville College diamondmen completed a non-conference sweep of Brevard College on the road with an 8-1 nightcap victory on Sunday evening.

Sophomore right-hander Chris Arbuthnot kept the Brevard hitters off-balance scattering six hits over 5.2 innings to earn the mound decision. The Knoxville, Tennessee native struck out seven, walked only one, and did not allow an earned run. Tommy Fester came in to thwart a bases-loaded jam and closed the game on the mound for the Scots.

Maryville tallied a pair of runs in the fourth inning on a Matthew Turner RBI groundout and a Jack Shuttleworth RBI single up the middle.

Kolton Hicks led off the sixth inning with his second collegiate big fly, his second blast of the day over the left-field wall.

Brevard answered in the bottom of the sixth with an unearned run off a Maryville miscue.

The Scots pushed four runs across the plate in their final at-bat in the seventh. Jimmy Meredith (2-for-3, 2 RBI, 2 runs scored) stroked a single to right field scoring Hicks and Matthew Petzelt. Meredith later scored on an Ian Campbell RBI single up the middle.

Maryville's nine-hit offensive attack was paced by Meredith and Ian Campbell (2-for4, 1 RBI, 1 run scored).

The Scots (2-3) will prepare to travel to Covenant College on Wednesday for a non-conference challenge against the Georgian Scots.
