Behind Emier Bowman's double-double performance, the Maryville College Scots rallied for an 80-70 USA South victory over Averett University on Saturday afternoon in MC's Boydson Baird Gymnasium.
Maryville jumped out to a ten-point advantage in the first half before Averett rallied to pull close at the half. Leading 29-19, the Cougars went on a 12-4 run before the intermission to make the score 33-31 in favor of the Scots at the break. MC's Emanuelle Garcia led all scorers at the half with 10 points off the bench. MC outrebounded the Cougars 20-12 with 10 offensive boards.
In the second half, Averett fought back to tie the game 45-45 at the 11:38 mark. Three consecutive buckets by MC's Daquan Summers over the next two minutes gave the Scots a 51-45 advantage. A Raymond Bullock tip-in at the 7:36 mark put Averett ahead 54-53. Maryville's Dante Hoppa tallied eight points over the next two minutes to help Maryville capture the lead for the final time. Key dunks by Emier Bowman and Malcolm Walker highlighted the Scots' 61% (16-for26) shooting effort in the final period.
Averett (7-6, 2-3 USA South) was paced by James Conteras Jr. The guard dropped a game-high 17 points while recording a game-high six steals. Timothy Henry added 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting while Raymond Bullock II tossed in 10 points while grabbing a team-high five rebounds. The Cougars finished the game 25-for-61 (41%) from the floor including a 4-for-13 effort (30%) from beyond the arc.
Maryville (12-4, 9-0 USA South) saw Bowman finish 7-for-10 from the field for a team-high 15 points while grabbing a game-high 10 rebounds. The Decatur, Georgia native added five blocks on a defense that forced 22 Cougar turnovers. Daquan Summers tossed in 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting. Dante Hoppa contributed 13 points and nine rebounds while dishing out three assists. Emanuelle Garcia dropped a pair of treys to finish with 10 points.
The victory is the 18th consecutive home win on Randy Lambert Court for the Scots.
The Scots will host Pfeiffer University (11-0) on Sunday. Tip-off for the USA South challenge is slated for 3:00 p.m. in the Boydson Baird Gymnasium.
