Elmore, Miettinen blasts lift Scots past Mary Baldwin 2-0

The Maryville College men's soccer program used a pair of late first half goals to cruise to a 2-0 victory over Mary Baldwin University on Saturday afternoon in Staunton, Virginia.

In the 43rd minute of the first half, junior Jameson Elmore dribbled to the upper left of the box before depositing a blast into the upper right of the goal just grazing the upper post before tickling the net. The goal was his second of the season and the ninth of his career in the orange and garnet.

Just one minute later, a defensive turnover led to an Austin Vinyard one-touch pass to Kai Miettinen on the right side. Miettinen, a senior from Knoxville, placed a right-footed attack into the lower right of the net past Mary Baldwin keeper Obdulio Argueta for his first goal of the season and fourth as a Fighting Scot.

In the first half Maryville's offense took nine shots, eight on goal, while the Fighting Squirrels managed only a pair of shots on goal both thwarted by Maryville keeper Mykal Manfred.

Each keeper kept the nets clean in the second half as the Scots finished with 16 shots, a dozen on goal. Maryville's stingy defense allowed only five shots on goal assisting with Manfred's shutout victory in goal.

Johnny Rakhmonberdiev, Kai Miettinen, and Aaron Rucker paced MC's offensive attack with a combined seven shots.

The Scots advanced to 3-2 on the season while Mary Baldwin falls to 2-3. The win is the Scots' first conference victory of the season. Maryville will travel to Averett University in Danville, Virginia on Sunday for a non-conference challenge. First touch is slated for 2:00 p.m.
