The Maryville College men's soccer program used a pair of goals by senior Kai Miettinen along with two goals by sophomore Jace Burchfiel to defeat USA South challenger Averett University by the score of 4-0 on Sunday afternoon in Danville, Virginia.
At the 30:36 mark in the first half, Maryville's Miettinen dribbled down the left side after a long pass from Jace Burchfiel. He entered the goalie box contested yet slipped a shot into the lower right of the goal past Averett keeper Colton Dutchess.
Less than three minutes later, a long throw-in by Chris Fernandez from the left side was attempted to be punched away by the Cougar keeper but Aaron Rucker directed a header deep in the goal crease where Miettinen connected for the second time into the lower right of the net. The goal was his third of the season and his third score during the Scots' USA South weekend swing through Virginia.
Maryville dominated offensively in the first half with a 19-3 shot margin paced by Miettinen's five shots while Rucker placed four shots.
Maryville's Aaron Rucker created his second assist of the game in the 75th minute. He took a pass into the left corner and directed a one-touch pass into the goalie crease where Jace Burchfiel slipped a one-timer into the lower right of the goal for his first career goal in the orange and garnet.
Just before the 82nd minute, Maryville's Ndubueze Henry directed a cross from the right to midfield where Jace Burchfiel connected for his second goal of the season with a strong shot from the top of the box into the top left of the net.
The Scots finished the game outshooting the Cougars 35-6 with 14 attempts on goal.
The victory advances the Scots to 4-2 on the season and 2-0 in USA South action. Averett falls to 3-4, 1-1 in league play.
Maryville will host USA South foe Pfeiffer University on Friday, September 20 for a 6:30 p.m. first touch.
