Smith's pitching aids Scots in fifth-straight shutout, 12-0

Maryville College earned their eighth shutout of the season and their fifth in a row, as the Scots earned the sweep of Covenant College, 12-0, in five innings.

MC freshman hurler Katlyn Smith gave up just a trio of hits, as the standout earned her fourth shutout of her career. She moved to 6-1 on the year, while lowering her ERA to an impressive 2.66.

She struck out four while walking only a pair in the USA South contest.

Rachel Taylor and Morgan Brewer each had big days for Maryville, as the pair combined for six of the Scots' 12 runs.

Friday's sweep keeps Maryville at a perfect 6-0 within the USA South Athletic Conference, as only the Scots and Piedmont College (4-0) hold unblemished marks.

The Orange and Garnet has outscored its USA South competition, 61-2, in those six games, while scoring double digits in four. MC has currently scored 59 unanswered runs over that stretch.

Maryville College started the second game much like the first. Brewer drew a lead off walk, before Christina White's bunt single put runners on the corners. Essence Strambler used a sacrifice fly to center to score Brewer for the first run of the game. Taylor Campbell notched a two-RBI double to center to score White and Taylor. An Alexus Murray single put runners on second and third, before Christen Torres' groundout scored Campbell from third. Sarah Gordon clipped an RBI single up the middle to plate Murray, as MC took a 5-0 lead in the first.

The Scots would add a sixth run in the top of the second. Back-to-back singles by Taylor and Campbell put runners on, before Murray's RBI double to left plated Taylor from second. MC would take a commanding 6-0 lead to the seventh, before adding yet another run.

A Brewer double down the left-field line would put a runner on, before she stole third. Covenant would make an attempt to catch her on the play, but the throw was high. Brewer scored on the error to make the score 7-0.

In the top of the fourth, Maryville would add yet another run. A walk, an error and a single would load the bases, before Sarah Gordon's RBI single to left score Taylor from third.

They would make it five straight innings with a run in the top of the fifth. Strambler laced an RBI single up the middle to score Brewer who singled earlier in the inning. Covenant would force a pair of out, but the Scots would score three on a pair of errors. Murray reached on a fielding error, before she would take third on a throwing error on the same play. Strambler and White score on the play, before Torres' RBI double to right-center plated Murray. The five-run inning would give MC a 12-0 win in five innings.

Maryville College (13-6, 6-0 USA South) saw Brewer go 2-for-3 with a trio of runs.
