Scots sweep Brevard behind Campbell's second homer of the day

Maryville College's Taylor Campbell continues her onslaught of the stat sheet, as the sophomore hit her fifth home run of the season in a 5-3 USA South win over Brevard College.

Campbell hit a home run in each of the USA South challenges on the day, as the Scots earned the conference sweep with an 8-0 win in the first game of the series.

Over the past six games, the reigning USA South Rookie of the Year has been a terror for opposing pitchers. Campbell has hit 11-for-16 over those six games, recording a .688 batting average.

She has four home runs, four doubles, 10 RBI, eight runs and five walks over that span.

Campbell led the Scots in a five-run fifth inning, earning the come-from-behind victory. Trailing 2-0, Sarah Gordon started things off with a single down the left-field line. Two quick outs led a pinch runner Ashleigh Geary on third, before Ashton Hayden's single to shortstop scored the speedy runner. Christina White singled up the middle, before Alexus Murray followed suit with an RBI shot through the right side.

Hayden scored on the play, before Campbell's three-run blast gave the Scots the win.

Maryville had an early chance in the bottom of the second inning. The Scots had a pair of runners thrown out at the plate on back-to-back fielder's choice, as Brevard maintained the even score at 0-all.

The Tornados put a pair of runs on the board in top of the third. A pair of singles and a walk loaded the bases, as Emily White earned an RBI. She singled to left-center, as a fielding error on the play allowed another to score. Micayla McCoy and Lauren Dowell scored for the two-run lead.

Brevard added an extra run in the top of the seventh, as Mari Cook's RBI single plated Dowell.

MC's Katlyn Smith picked up her second win of the day in relief, as the sophomore hurled 2.1 innings. Smith gave up just three hits and one earned run, striking out two Tornados. Casey Joliff had a solid start, allowing just one earned run over 4.2 innings. She also struck out a pair, while giving up eight hits.

Maryville College (10-6) moved to a perfect 2-0 in USA South play, as Campbell hit 1-for-3 with a trio of RBI and a run. MC's seven-hit effort was spread across seven different players, as Hayden was 1-for-2 with a run and an RBI. Murray was 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI, as White was 1-for-3 with a run. Geary added a run for the Scots, while Reid Ballard, Christen Torres and Gordon each added a hit.

Brevard (8-16, 2-2 USA South) saw Dowell go 2-for-4 with a pair of runs, while Cook was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Maryville College will look next to four games on a USA South road swing this weekend. The Scots will face Wesleyan College (Ga.) in a double-header beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 23, before taking on Agnes Scott College beginning at 1 p.m. on Sunday, March 24.
