Torres' pair of three-run homers lift MC over Wesleyan, 15-2

Maryville College's Christen Torres led an offensive explosion on Saturday afternoon, as the senior blasted a pair of three-run home runs in a 15-2 win over Wesleyan College (Ga.).

MC's had their brooms handy since the beginning of USA South Athletic Conference play, as the Scots' 18-hit attack lifted them over the Wolves in five innings.

The victory marks the fourth-straight for Maryville, as they have swept two USA South series in a row for a 4-0 conference mark.

Torres went 3-for-3 with six RBI, two runs and her pair of homers. Reid Ballard, Alexus Murray and Essence Strambler each had three-hit days to lead the Scots.

Maryville jumped ahead 8-0 in the top of the first inning. A Ballard RBI single plated Murray, before Torres towered her first three-run shot to score Ballard and pinch runner Grace Gordon. MC wasn't finished there, plating five additional runs in the inning.

Sarah Gordon scored on a Wesleyan error, before Christina White laced a two-RBI single to bring home Ashton Hayden and Strambler. White scored on an error after stealing second, as the Scots held a commanding 8-0 lead early.

Wesleyan got two of those runs back in the bottom of the first inning. The Wolves saw Jillian Crosby place a two-RBI single to score B Collender and K Huelett for an 8-2 ball game after one inning.

MC plated six additional runs in the top of the third to extend their lead to 14-2. A Murray triple scored Amaya Goodloe and Hayden, before Taylor Campbell promptly plated the catcher with an RBI single of her own. Torres followed suit with her second three-run shot of the game, scoring Ballard and Campbell for the 12-run MC lead.

The Scots added an insurance run in the top of the fourth, as Campbell's RBI single scored Goodloe from second. Maryville held on through the fifth for the 15-2 victory.

Casey Joliff picked up her second win of the year in the circle for the Scots, as the senior hurler went 5.0 innings in only 40 pitches. She struck out three, while giving up two earned runs and four hits.

Maryville (11-6, 4-0 USA South) was led by Torres' effort. Ballard was 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI, as Murray was 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBI. Strambler was 3-for-4 with a run, while Campbell went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run. White was 1-for-2 with two RBI and a run, as Goodloe scored two runs. Grace Gordon and Sarah Gordon each added a run, as Hayden was 1-for-4 with two runs. Morgan Brewer was 2-for-4 at the plate.

Wesleyan (6-10, 1-3) was saw their four hits spread across four Wolves. Crosby was 1-for-2 with two RBI on the day.

Maryville College will continue their weekend road swing, as they travel to Decatur, Ga. MC takes on Agnes Scott College in a double-header beginning at 1 p.m. tomorrow, Sunday, March 24.
