Scots fall to BSC, 1-0

Maryville College fell in the second game of the double-header with Birmingham-Southern College on Wednesday, as a seventh-inning, bases-loaded walk gave the Panthers the go-ahead run, 1-0.

The back-and-forth game saw four double plays over the span of two innings, as both defenses kept each other at bay.

Jessica Perley earned the win in the circle for Birmingham-Southern, as she allowed just three hits in seven innings of work. She struck out seven Scots, facing just 23 batters over the game.

MC's Casey Joliff was also stellar in the circle, pitching 52 strikes in 77 pitches. The senior allowed just four hits, as she struck out four on the day.

The game was perfect for both squads through two-and-a-half innings, before Christen Torres broke the silence with a walk. Pinch runner Christina White stole second, before being stranded at third with a 0-0 score.

Back-to-back singles up the middle by Abby Spencer and Kendell Hamm put runners on for the Panthers in the fourth, but Savannah Lee grounded into a 1-5-3 double play to leave the game scoreless.

MC's fourth inning also ended with a double-play ball, as Taylor Campbell ended the Panther's fifth-inning threat. She snagged a line drive, getting pinch runner M Mus at first. Again, the Scots' fifth ended in with the fourth double play in two innings.

The two teams went to the final inning scoreless, as the Panthers drew a pair of hit-by-pitch and a pair of walks. The bases-loaded walk gave Birmingham-Southern the victory, 1-0.

Maryville (14-8) saw their three hits scattered between Ashton Hayden, Sarah Gordon and Campbell. Torres drew a walk on the day for the Scots.

Birmingham-Southern (20-5) also saw their hits scattered across multiple players. Kyrstyn Fisher was 1-for-2, while Saydee Keith went 1-for-1. Hamm and Bailey Murphy were each 1-for-3, as Alyssa Fowler earned an RBI. Pinch runner Ella Day scored the game's only run.

Maryville will return to action this weekend, as the Scots face their last road swing of the regular season. MC plays LaGrange College on Saturday, March 30 at 2 p.m., before taking on Huntingdon College on Sunday, March 31, also a 2 p.m. start.
