A pair of big innings proved costly for Maryville College in the first game of the day, as the Scots fell to Randolph College, 12-9, in Lynchburg, Va.
Maryville College struck first in the top of the first inning. Amaya Goodloe and Christina White drew back-to-back walks, before both stole a base. Campbell reached on an error, as Goodloe scores, before Ballard's RBI groundout plated White. MC led 2-0 early.
Randolph College answered quickly, however, plating seven runs in the bottom of the inning. A Doninique Irving single and a Delaney Nuckols walk put a pair of runners on, before Lexi Hawkins walked to load the bases. An Allie Jarrett fielder's choice RBI scored one run, as an error scored another on the play for the Wildcats.
Kayla Love's RBI single plated Hawkins, before Taylor Friess' RBI single forced an MC pitching change.
Paige Naples two-RBI double score Friess and Love, before Irving earned an RBI with a single to score Naples from third. The seven-run inning gave Randolph a 7-2 advantage after one inning.
Maryville plated its third run in the bottom of the second, as the Scots remained hitless. Annie Fowler and Morgan Brewer were each hit-by-pitch before advancing to scoring position on a wild pitch. Deck's sacrifice fly plated Fowler for a 7-3 score.
MC pulled to within one in the bottom of the third, scoring a trio of runs. Campbell's leadoff single got the Scots started, before pinch runner Bailey Ensley stole second. A walk and an Emily Hill single loaded the bases for MC, Kaliyah Hensic's RBI single plated Campbell. Brewer earned an RBI on a fielder's choice, before Deck picked up her second RBI with a single. Maryville trailed 7-6 after three innings.
The Scots tied it an inning later, as White walked and stole second to leadoff the bottom of the fourth. Campbell plated the speedster with an RBI double to make the score 7-all.
A five-run bottom of the fifth would give Randolph a lead for good, however. Jarrett had a two-RBI single in the game, while Nuckols and Friess added RBIs in the inning. After five, the Wildcats led 12-7.
Maryville loaded the bases for a seventh-inning rally, as Kylie Canova and Deck would score in the inning. It wouldn't be enough, however, as the Scots fell, 12-9.
Maryville (1-2) saw Campbell follow Deck with a 2-for-4 effort, as she had an RBI and a run. Ballard added a pair of RBI and a run, while Hensic went 1-for-5 with a run and an RBI. Hill was 1-for-5, while Goodloe, Fowler and Canova scored runs on the day.
Randolph College (1-0) saw Nuckols lead the way with a 3-for-4 afternoon. She added a pair of runs and an RBI, while Friess went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run. Jarrett added a trio of RBI on a 1-for-3 afternoon.
