Scots fall to No. 5 Thomas More to open Julie Costello Memorial

Maryville College opened the 2018 Julie Costello Memorial Classic in Crestview Hills, Ky. on Saturday, as the Scots took a tough loss to No. 5 Thomas More, 106-44.

After playing to a 3-2 score at 8:28 mark, the Saints would rally for a 27-2 run to close out the first quarter with a 30-4 lead. Thomas More extended that to a 38-2 run for a 41-4 advantage at the 6:11 mark, before Klaire Varney would end the rally.

Varney knocked back-to-back shots that included a trey off an Elsa Eckenrod assist, as an Eckenrod steal allowed Varney to score a jumper to cut it to 41-9.

Thomas More led 57-14 at the break.

Maryville would score 30 second-half points, as they outscored the Saints, 20-17, in the fourth quarter of action.

The Scots (0-3) were led by Kelley Wandell's nine points and four rebounds. Catherine Upshaw had seven points, three rebounds, two assists and a steal off the bench, as both Varney and Libby Gardner finished the game with five points. Varney added a team-high eight rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Eckenrod had four points, as Holland Jerrolds, Brooke McCurdy and Shelby Hix matched her. Erin Beasley rounded out MC's scoring with two points on the day.

Maryville shot 16-of-57 (28.1 percent) from the field, while notching four treys at an 18.2 percent clip. The Scots were hindered by 24 turnovers, as Thomas More recorded 33 points off turnovers.

The Saints held a 43-26 advantage on rebounds, as they outscored Maryville, 55-19, in the paint.

Thomas More shot 59.1 percent (38-of-64), while tallying nine treys at a 50 percent clip.

The fifth-ranked Saints (5-0) saw four players finish in double figures. Madison Temple had 23 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and three steals, while Emily Schultz added 14 points and nine boards. Kaela Saner and Asyah Mitchell had 13 points each.

The Scots look next to Dominican University (Ill.) tomorrow to complete the Julie Costello Memorial. Tipoff in Crestview Hill, Ky. is slated for 2 p.m.
