Varney, Carruthers lead Scots past Sewanee 74-48

The Maryville College women's basketball team opened their 2019-20 season at the Agnes Scott Tip-off Classic in Decatur, Georgia with a thrilling 74-48 victory over the University of the South on Friday evening.

The Scots' stingy defense limited Sewanee to only 28-percent shooting from the floor that included only a 5-for-31 effort from beyond the arc.

Maryville's offense was paced by Klaire Varney and Courtney Carruthers who each deposited a game-high 21 points. Varney, a junior from Crossville, went 7-for-9 from the floor while recording six rebounds. Carruthers came off the bench for an 8-for-17 effort from the floor while sinking a pair of treys. The freshman from Maryville added five boards to help MC out rebound the Tigers 40-34 on the evening. Freshman Abbi Joseph, also from Maryville, racked up 11 points and five rebounds in her collegiate debut. Junior Elsa Eckenrod was strong on the boards leading the Scots with eight rebounds while sinking eight points.

"I'm very pleased with our team effort tonight," stated MC Head Coach Darrin Travillian. "We had great contributions from the entire roster. We know we have a long way to go, but this was a nice first step."

Maryville shot 88-percent (15-for-17) at the charity stripe while accumulating 13 team assists and five blocked shots as a unit.

The Scots will challenge Bob Jones University on Saturday to complete their opening classic action. Tip-off in Georgia is slated for 4:00 p.m.
