Hix, Varney, Carruthers lead Scots past Bob Jones, 89-55

Maryville College moved to 2-0 on the young season Saturday, as the Scots defeated Bob Jones University, 89-55, in the Agnes Scott Tip-off Classic in Decatur, Ga.

Maryville shot an impressive 49.2 percent from the floor on the afternoon, as they followed a trio of 20-point scorers to the non-conference victory.

Klaire Varney led the way with 24 points, while Shelby Hix added 22 points. Freshman Courtney Carruthers scored 21 points for the second game in a row to start her Orange and Garnet career, as MC deposited a dozen treys on the afternoon.

"I'm very proud of our work on both ends of the floor this weekend," Head Coach Darrin Travillian said. "We were solid defensively, and we shared the ball extremely well. The balanced scoring and willingness to take charges speak to what this team is at its core."

Maryville had a huge second quarter, outscoring the Bruins, 28-20. MC shot 57.1 percent, going 8-for-14 in the quarter. They also added five treys in that period, as Carruthers scored 13 of her 21 in the second quarter.

The freshman standout went 3-of-3 from the floor – all from long range – while going 4-of-4 from the charity stripe. Carney added six points in the run, as it gave Maryville a 44-26 lead. The Scots outscored Bob Jones, 16-6 in the first quarter to keep an early lead.

Maryville followed that second-quarter effort with a key third-quarter run, as well. The Scots outscored the Bruins, 27-18, as Varney managed 11 of those points. Hix had six points in the quarter, as Carruthers and Holland Jerrolds had five and three. The Scots had five offensive rebounds, as Abbi Joseph and Hix had two each.

The Scots shot 12-of-22 (54.5 percent) in the third quarter to take control of the game.

Maryville (2-0) followed a 24-point outing by Varney, as she added five points, five assists, three steals and two blocks. She went 10-of-16, including a pair of 3-pointers on the day.

Hix had 22 points, six rebounds, two assists, two steals, and a block, as she went 8-of-12 on the day. She went 3-of-4 from beyond the arc, as Carruthers added four treys on the day. She had 21 points and a team-high four steals. Joseph had nine points, nine rebound, four assists and a steal, while Eckenrod added seven points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals. Libby Gardner and Holland Jererolds had three points each, as Jerrold added six boards. Garnder had a team-high six assists.

Maryville shot 31-of-62 (49.2 percent) from the floor while shooting 40 percent from beyond the arc with a 12-of-30 effort. MC went 15-of-20 at the free-throw line, while tallying 23 assists on 31 field goals.

Bob Jones (1-2) was paced by Delaney Edwards' near double-double, as she had 15 points and nine rebounds. Madison Shupe had 12 points and five boards, while Kylee Leffew added 10 points on the day.

Maryville will return to action on Tuesday, Nov. 12. The Scots travel to Emory, Va. to face off with Emory & Henry College with a 7:00 p.m. tipoff.
