Maryville College freshman guard Courtney Carruthers exploded for a game-high 38 points to lead the Scots to an 81-71 non-conference road victory over Emory & Henry College in Emory, Virginia on Tuesday evening.
The collegiate rookie from Maryville went 13-for-24 from the floor including an amazing 8-for-13 effort from beyond the arc. An additional trio of Scots posted double-digit scoring while the squad shot over 52-percent from the floor during the challenge. Junior Klaire Varney finished with 13 points while bringing down a game-high nine rebounds. Shelby Hix and Elsa Eckenrod each tallied ten points with Hix sinking 5-of-8 shots and Eckenrod grabbing five boards. Senior Libby Gardner deposited eight points that included a pair of treys while dishing out a game-high six assists.
MC took the first quarter 27-16 with an 11-for-16 shooting effort (69%) while sinking 4-of-5 from downtown. The Scots extended their lead at the half out-scoring the Wasps 22-18 in the second quarter with a 59% shooting performance. The Scots cooled off in the second half, but key rebounds, defensive stops, and a consistent effort from the charity stripe (11-for-18) prevented the E&H comeback.
"This was a great road win in the early going," stated Coach Darrin Travillian. "We are learning on the fly, but I like how we are responding. Obviously, Courtney erupted offensively, and we made some big plays on both ends when we needed them."
Sydney McKinney paced Emory & Henry (1-1) with a team-high 22 points while Peyton Williams added 19 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
Maryville (3-0) will now prepare for the Lee's Famous Recipe/ Hampton Inn Classic in Danville, Kentucky on November 22-23. The Scots will challenge Oglethorpe University on Friday and take on tournament host Centre College on Saturday before the Thanksgiving holiday.
