MC's blocks, rally not enough in Battle of the Scots, 3-1

Maryville College's block party and comeback rally was not enough on Wednesday night, as MC fell in the battle of the Scots, 3-1.

The Scots recorded 11 total blocks, as freshman Arin Wyttenbach recorded seven in the 25-20, 25-23, 23-25, 25-21 loss to Covenant.

Brianne Sidner, Nia Haller and Saidee McDaniel each recorded double-double efforts in the match.

After Covenant jumped out to a 6-3 lead, Maryville clawed their way back. The Scots claimed eight-straight points to go ahead, 11-6, before the Georgian Scots would find a rally for a 14-all score.

Covenant would rattle off five-straight for a 20-16 lead, as Maryville would use kills from Brianne Sidner and Nia Haller. The Georgian Scots would rally again, however, before a Ginny Moore kill and a Schuyler Moore ace would end the set, 25-20, in favor of Covenant.

Maryville College jumped out to a 20-18 lead, before Covenant would use MC errors for a 20-all score in the back-and-forth set. Kills by Lauren Espinal and Arin Wyttenbach give the Scots at 22-20 lead, before the Georgian Scots would use a 5-1 run to end the set aided by a trio of Maryville errors.

A Hannah Stewart service ace and a Jessica Seehorn kill would end the set in comeback fashion for Covenant, 25-23.

In the evening's third set, Maryville jumped to a 4-0 lead off a kill from Sidner. Covenant would challenge again, cutting the lead to 8-6, before MC used four-consecutive points behind Haller's attacks. The Georgian Scots would use a 9-1 run to take the lead, 15-13, before they extended that to a 21-18 lead. A Haller kill and a Covenant error would cut Covenant's lead to one, 21-20, before a Hannah Harris kill would extend it to 22-20 as MC took its second timeout.

Sidner would find a huge kill, before combining with Wyttenbach for a block and a 22-22 score. A Wyttenbach kill from Saidee McDaniel would make it three straight for the Tennessean Scots, giving MC a 23-22 lead. That would force Covenant's second timeout of the set.

A Covenant error would give the Scots set point, before Sidner would connect with a kill for the 25-23 set victory.

In the fourth set of the match, Maryville would jump out to a 6-0 lead, eventually stretching it to a 10-2 advantage behind kills from Haller, McDaniel and Espinal combined with an ace from Sidner. Covenant would send a surge again, tying the set at 17-all, before Chloe Storm's kills would give the Georgian Scots the lead.
