Scots fight off pair of match points, as defense shines in 3-2 rally over Piedmont

The Maryville College Scots fought off a pair of match points on Saturday, as they rallied from down two sets to defeat Piedmont College, 3-2.

The Lady Lions held match points in both the third and fourth sets, before MC would rally in both. The Scots would take control in the fifth set for the win, hitting .231 and holding Piedmont to a negative .042 for the win.

The Scots took the USA South match by the scores of 21-15, 21-25, 26-24, 26-24, 15-6.

MC's defense held strong in the match, recording 111 total digs and eight total blocks. Nia Haller had 26 digs and four blocks, while Kaitlyn Flickinger added 23. Saidee McDaniel and Taylor Youell each had 15 digs, while Yasmeen Chan added 13.

Maryville College fell behind early in the first set, 9-3, Rhianna Tyldesley was the only Scot to record a kill. MC rallied, cutting the score to 12-10, as kills by Arin Wyttenbach, Allison Botts and Kelley Wandell.

Piedmont would rally again, before Maryville would cut the score to 17-15 on Tyldesley's kill. The Scots would cut it to one, 22-21, before the Lady Lions would use a 3-0 run to take the first set, 25-21.

In the second set, Maryville would take 6-4 lead off kills by Botts, Espinal, Dejane Hester-Taylor and Madison Wilkerson. However, Piedmont would take a 6-0 run for a 10-6 lead, before extending that to an 8-1 rally.

MC would post a 4-0 run of their own behind a trio of kills from Espinal to make the score 12-11 in favor of the Lady Lions. Piedmont would take another late run for a 17-11 score, before they fought off a late MC run for a 25-21 second-set victory.

Maryville would rally, however, in the third set. After going up 10-6, the Lady Lions would use a 7-0 streak to take a 13-10 advantage.

Maryville would use a pair of Flickinger services aces in a 4-0 run to take the lead, 14-13.

The squad would trade points, before a Tyldesley kill would give the Scots a 23-22 lead. An error and a Katelyn Durmire kill would give Piedmont match point, before a trio of Lions' errors would give Maryvile the 26-24 win in set three.

In set four, both squads would trade points until the match was tied 22-all. An MC error and a kill by Kylie Blanton would give the Lady Lions their second match point of the contest, before the Scots would rally again. A kill by Botts, combined with a pair of kills from Wandell would end set four in Maryville's favor, 26-24, and force a decisive fifth set.

In that set, the Scots would take complete control. The Orange and Garnet went up 4-0, before extending that streak to 6-1 on kills by Wandell, Hester-Taylor and Botts.

Maryville would extend that run to 11-2, before taking set five, 15-6.

MC (9-9, 3-1 USA South) was led by Botts' 11-kill, nine-dig afternoon. Hester-Taylor had 10 kills, four digs and four blocks, as Wandell had nine kills.

McDaniel had a double-double 20 assists and 15 digs, while fellow setter Youell had a double-double with 16 assists and 15 digs.

Haller had her 24 digs with four blocks, two service aces and seven kills, while Flickinger neared a double-double with 23 digs and nine assists to go with a pair of service aces.

For Piedmont (9-7, 3-2) was led by Anna Wright's 14 kills, as Durmire added 13 kills and eight blocks. Lainey Choiniere had a double-double 21 assists and 17 digs, while Jenna Wendel added 23 assists. Kaitlyn Loesel led the Lions with 25 digs.
