McDaniel's double-double not enough as Scots fall to Brevard, 3-1

The Maryville College Scots were swept on Homecoming Saturday, as the Brevard College Tornados earned a 3-1 win.

Maryville fell to Brevard by the scores of 23-25, 25-21, 25-22, 25-19 despite a pair of nine-kill efforts from Nia Haller and Dejane Hester-Taylor.

In the opening set, MC jumped to a 14-8 lead on a 4-0 run that saw Rhianna Tyldesley and Lauren Espinal record kills. Brevard chipped away, however, cutting the score to one – 17-16 – on a Stephanie Lambert kills, before a kill by Brianne Sidner and a Tornado error gave MC control.

Kills by Tyldesley and Espinal would make it set point, before Brevard fought off a trio. Tyldesley threw down a kill from Saidee McDaniel for the set one victory, 25-23.

In set two, the back-and-forth set found itself at a 16-15 MC lead with a McDaniel kill. The Tornados would rattled off seven straight to make it 22-16, before Maryville would counter with four of their own for a 22-20 Brevard lead. Whitney DeMoss would throw down a pair of kills late, however, to take the victory, 25-21.

Set three saw the Tornados jumped to a quick start, going out to a 7-0 lead early. Maryville would recover, cutting Brevard's lead to two on seven different occasions with kills from Hester-Taylor, Sidner and Kelley Wandell. However, Brevard would take the set, 25-22.

In the fourth set, the Tornados again jumped to a quick 5-1 advantage. Maryville would cut the lead to 8-5 on a Wandell kill, before Brevard was able to rattle off five straight to make it 13-5. The Scots used a kill from Nia Haller and a pair of service aces from MacKenzie Marcrum for a 6-0 run of their own to make it 13-11.

They would use a 5-0 run late with kills from Tyldesley and Madison Wilkerson for an 18-17 score, before Brevard would outscore them 7-2 and end the match with a 25-19 set-four win.

Maryville (13-12) was led by McDaniel's double-double of 18 assists and 10 digs. She added a pair of kills with a .667 hitting percentage.

Hester-Taylor had nine kills and four digs, while Haller had nine kills, 10 digs and an assist. Tyldesley had eight kills, three digs and a pair of assists as Espinal, Sidner and Wandell each had seven kills. Sidner also had four digs, three service aces and an assist.

Taylor Youell added 16 assists with eight digs, as Yasmeen Chan had seven and 10 digs. Marcrum had three digs and a pair of service aces.

Brevard (12-6) was led by Hannah Elmore's 28-kill effort. Whitney DeMoss added 13 kills, as Josie McElroy recorded 49 of the Tornados' 56 assists. Maggie Weiss had 15 digs.

Maryville will return home on Wednesday, Oct. 25, as they host Oglethorpe University at 6 p.m. for Senior Day.
