Bonee, Mathews not enough to get past Guilford, 3-1

Maryville College opened the Guilford Invitational on Friday night, as MC fell to host Guilford College, 3-1.

The Scots batted for four sets, but couldn't fight off a three-set Quaker rally. MC took the opening set, 25-20, before a late surge gave Guilford set two, 27-25. The Quakers won the match over the next two sets by the score of 25-17, 25-21.

Maryville was paced by Meredith Bonee's second triple-double in eight matches. The sophomore had 16 kills, 14 assists and 14 digs, as Saidee McDaniel and Brianne Sidner each added a double-double.

In the opening set of the match, Maryville hit .233 as a unit. The defensive front held Guilford to just a .049 effort in the first set, forcing eight total errors. MC had just five errors in 30 total attacks during the opening set.

MC jumped out to an early 11-3 lead on the Quakers, as Bonee and Sidner recorded two kills each. Maggie Mathews added a kill and a service ace, before Guilford would rally. The Quakers scored seven of the next eight to bring the score to 12-10. The Scots rallied again, taking a 22-16 advantage behind a Dejane Hester-Taylor kill and a Bonee kill. Guilford scored four straight to cut the lead to two, 22-20, before the Scots scored three-straight for the 25-20 victory.

In the second set, it was a back-and-forth match that saw 11 ties and six lead changes. The Quakers took advantage late, rallying for three-straight points on a pair of Bryce Smith aces to give Guilford a 23-19 lead. Maryville tallied five straight to force set point, as the Quakers tallied four errors. A Khaira Bolden kill gave the Quakers new life, as a Kelley Wandell attack gave MC set point again at 25-24. However, a kill by Christian Ritter and a pair of MC errors gave the Quakers the second set, 27-25.

MC battled through the third and fourth sets, as Guilford College took the final two by 25-17, 25-21 tallies.

Maryville College (4-4) was led by Bonee's double-double, while McDaniel added 18 assists and 10 digs. She also had a pair of aces, while Sidner had 10 kills and 13 digs.

Hester-Taylor added six kills and a pair of blocks while hitting .308, as Wandell had six kills at a .400 clip. She added two digs, an assists and a block, while Mathews added a team-leading 16 digs, six kills, three aces and four blocks. Arin Wyttenbach also had four blocks, an assist and a kill, as MacKenzie Marcrum added 13 digs, four assists and a pair of aces.

For Guilford College (5-3) it was Christian Ritter who had a double-double of 14 kills and 15 digs. She led the squad in both categories, while Morgan Tomkins added 10 kills. Tina Eucker and Jenna Myer had 20 assists each, while Cam Blankenship tallied 10 digs.

The Scots will return to action tomorrow, Sept. 14, as they finish out the Guilford Invitational. MC plays Salem College in non-conference action at 11:00 a.m., before taking on William Peace University – also in non-league play – at 3:00 p.m.
